Org. Setting and Reporting

This internship is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Rio de Janeiro, within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC) and is available for an initial period of two months, with an opportunity for extension up to, but not exceeding, six months, pending on the needs of the department and availability of the intern.

UNICs are the principal sources of information about the United Nations system in the countries where they are located, they are also responsible for promoting greater public understanding of and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by disseminating information on the work of the Organization to people everywhere, especially in developing countries.

The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of the National Information Officer (NIO) or the Public Information Assistant (PIA).

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision of the National Information Officer (NIO) or Public Information Assistant (PIA), the responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

Assist in the provision of general office support; assist in responding to complex information requests and inquiries of UNIC Rio de Janeiro;

Assist in the production of journalistic content and news stories; assist in drafting media and other communication documents; Assist in translating from/to English of text or/and video or/and graphics;

Assist in the compiling of basic information for use in the preparation and production of communications products/services about the UN;

Assist in monitoring the media for news stories of interest to the UNIC; Assist on media outreach, e.g. distribution of press releases and other information materials to mass media and civil society organizations;

Assist in development and final production of social media products, as well as enrich potential online initiatives to audiences to raise awareness of the UN work;

Assist in other activities as requested.

Education:

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must:

(a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or

(b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent). A field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is desirable.

Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Work Experience:

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in Portuguese and knowledge of English (at least read, write and translate) are required for the internship.

In your Personal History Profile, be sure to include all past work experiences, IT skills, and three references. This internship is designed only for candidates with degrees or currently enrolled in Journalism, Communication or Media Studies.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, interns may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. The intern must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
